The Boston College Libraries facilitate data-driven research, digital project creation, digital scholarship-based teaching, digital publishing, and scholarly communication. The Digital Scholarship Group spearheads these endeavors by connecting people and ideas with expertise. We see ourselves as teachers, consultants, and collaborators who aim to cultivate and support the community of digital scholarship practices at Boston College. As we strive to meet this purpose, we do so with a commitment to accessibility, transparency, and preservation.
What is Digital Scholarship?
Digital scholarship (DS) is the critical use of digital methods and tools in conducting research, presenting scholarship, and teaching. DS practices are not in place of traditional research and pedagogical methods but instead are an extension of them. Digital humanities falls under the umbrella of DS and incorporates humanities specific practices and methodologies.
We Strive to Counter Issues of Inequality and Injustice
We are committed to advancing the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion in digital scholarship by developing projects that focus on historically marginalized peoples and by being mindful of the digital divide, digital redlining, accessibility for the disabled, and racial and gender biases inherent in technology.
We Promote Open Source Tools and Scholarship
We support the use of open source tools and the creation of open access scholarship. Equally, we strive to be transparent about our processes. (See our Github repository for more on our open endeavors.)
We are Experimental
We are committed to exploring and documenting new tools and methods with you, expanding our capacity as we do. We don’t limit our efforts to a specific set of supported technologies but are interested in finding and addressing changing needs on campus.
We are Committed to the Boston College Mission
We are invested in projects that include pedagogically-rich student involvement or that transcend individual semesters and the boundaries of the institution. In this way, we align ourselves with the Boston Colleges mission which strives, through a rigorous intellectual and teaching tradition, to prepare students to be citizens and leaders in a global society.
