Digital Studio: New Gaming & Immersive Room

We are pleased to announce the Digital Studio’s new Gaming and Immersive Room (formally the Sound Room). With the growing demand for video games and immersive experiences in teaching and learning, this space allows faculty to incorporate these media into their instruction and students into their course assignments by creating easy access to the necessary technologies. The technologies include a PlayStation 5, 2 PS5 controllers, and a Meta Quest VR headset. Some key points to know are:

  • Faculty and students can submit requests to the Digital Studio for game purchases. (Purchases are based on the game’s relevance to teaching and research.)
  • Likewise, faculty and students can request experiences be downloaded onto the VR headset.
  • A laptop can be connected to the gaming monitor to view other visualizations, such as 360-degree video. (This is especially helpful for people who cannot wear VR headsets due to motion sickness or vision issues.)

Why Video Games?

To help those less familiar with the video game world understand its value, Digital Studio student assistant Amen Amare (class of ’26) wrote the following to give some insight:

“The PS5 can be a valuable educational tool, particularly in disciplines like game design, digital arts, and media studies. Its technology allows for hands-on learning, enabling students to explore and create within these fields. Faculty can also leverage the system to enhance teaching methods, making lessons more interactive and engaging. The PS5 is also a powerful entertainment hub that provides a much-needed break from academic pressures. Its advanced graphics and immersive gameplay deliver a top-tier gaming experience that can help students relax and recharge after long study sessions.”
